UN SanctionsApp, formerly known as “SanctionsApp,” is an interactive analytical tool tailored for scholars and practitioners engaged in the examination or development of United Nations (UN) targeted sanctions. It offers comprehensive information on all UN sanctions imposed since 1991.
The foundation of UN SanctionsApp originates from the extensive research conducted by the Targeted Sanctions Consortium (TSC), a consortium of over fifty global scholars and policy experts with specialized knowledge of UN targeted sanctions.
Since its inception, UN SanctionsApp has undergone updates and maintenance by a dedicated team comprising Prof. Thomas Biersteker, Dr. Zuzana Hudáková, and Dr. Marcos Tourinho under the patronage of the Graduate Institute in Geneva. The app provides access to a wealth of knowledge, including texts from numerous UN Security Council resolutions, alongside interactive filtering features constructed from the TSC's data.
The app comprises six primary sections:
- Types of sanctions: Offers insights into various UN sanctions measures since 1991 with excerpts from historical UN Security Council resolutions.
- Cases & episodes: Features detailed analyses of 80 unique episodes across 26 UN sanctions regimes since 1991, complete with effectiveness evaluations.
- Designing sanctions: Provides a succinct guideline on essential aspects to consider when formulating sanctions.
- Sanctions filter: Facilitates filtering through UN sanctions episodes based on specific characteristics.
- Quick facts: Includes an interactive map displaying historical and active UN sanctions regimes and fundamental details about UN sanctions.
- User guide: Explains the fundamental concepts and structure of the app for better navigation.
Incorporating a search function, users can swiftly access required information within UN SanctionsApp’s extensive database.
The journey of UN SanctionsApp commenced at the Graduate Institute in Geneva with support from the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and Global Affairs Canada. Subsequent versions have been meticulously refined and updated to ensure accuracy and relevance for users.
- Version 1.0 (June 2013): Developed by Thomas Biersteker, Sue Eckert, Marcos Tourinho, Zuzana Hudáková, aided by Cecilia Cannon, and programmed by Colaco SA.
- Version 6.0 (August 2020): Produced by Thomas Biersteker, Zuzana Hudáková, Marcos Tourinho, designed and programmed by WEBIKON, s.r.o.
